Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (7/10 stars)
Among Us!
Not a bad sequel to be honest. Superb exposition and development up until the murder, as all of characterization, foreshadowing, and red herrings are quickly established with attention to detail that parallel, if not exceed, the original film. Beyond enjoying the collab of Kathryn Hahn from WandaVision, Lesli Odom Jr. From Hamilton, and Kate Hudson loved by my mom, the cameos of Yo-Yo Ma, Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant, and Serena Williams fill the first act with surprises and laughters. In addition, convincing performances, intricate plot, and suspenseful narration entirey demonstrate the capacity of modernized Agatha-Christie-style murder mystery.
And then we have the lengthy middle section full of recollection and recollections within recollection - twistier than before? Sure, but it also ruins completely the setting and tempo constructed so far, stiffly dragging the audience into a 40-minute prologue that could’ve been displayed in a few flashbacks. With the almost disastrous second act, the resolution is pretty much predictable, turning a thriller into a glass-splashing, Mona-Lisa-burning, island-exploding comedy.
In the end it’s another story of retired southern-accent 007 defeating moronic white wealthy male with the one kind heroine — and let’s just say, Janelle Monae’s character is not at all viewer-friendly as Ana De Armas.
